Performance-based learning leads to (or begins within!) the workforce. Jobsite performance-based learning translation: performing an occupation, on the jobsite, for a company.

Companies, similar to what technical colleges do, can use performance-based learning to:

  • Define high performance
  • Establish what employees need to learn
  • Design learning and assessment

By using a Job Book, a detailed training guide detailing the occupation’s tasks, competencies, and performance criteria, companies can:

  • Develop accurate, consistent training for all employees within an occupation
  • Guide trainers and employees through the learning experience
  • Assess employee performance
  • Document employee progress toward wage or career progression
  • Identify training gaps for continuous improvement

Define the occupation using DACUM

Companies and colleges alike often define high-performance by analyzing the target occupation using the DACUM (Developing A Curriculum) process.

The DACUM process quickly and efficiently establishes the training

  • Tasks
  • Topics
  • Tools
  • And more

that workers must apply to perform the occupation successfully.

Deliver learning and assess results using Job Books

Job Books can be modified to meet many learning needs. The most common job book types are:

  • Full DACUM, organized by duties: All tasks are included.  Like the DACUM, they’re organized by duty.  Wisconsin Apprenticeship uses this format frequently to ensure employers train to the same broad occupational outcomes.
  • Full DACUM, organized by "levels": All tasks are included but are organized by (customizable!) levels, often years.  Teck Alaska, Red Dog Mine utilizes this format to establish skill progression within many of its occupations.
  • Specific task or tasks: Some tasks are more difficult or critical to perform correctly.  Convert them into a job book and add (customizable!) scoring guides and rating scales to guide assessment.
